Michael Schiavo Michael Schiavo Author, Terri: The Truth and Activist Program Title - Eating Disorders: The Truth Behind Terri's Tragedy Michael Schiavo’s private life became a public battleground during his seven-year controversial, and ultimately successful, campaign to remove his wife Terri Schiavo’s feeding tube after she collapsed and lapsed into a persistent vegetative state. One of the more polarizing events in recent history, the headlines, editorials, and reports seemingly covered every possible angle of “The Schiavo Case,” as the nation divided over right-to-life and privacy issues. Yet one important angle remained unexplored – until now. At the podium, Michael Schiavo, with the aid of time, reflection, and medical training, reveals Terri’s secret life before the tragedy: her battle with bulimia. Michael Schiavo’s little-known personal story, fighting first to heal his wife and ultimately to let her die with dignity, were detailed in his book, Terri: The Truth. In his quest to care for Terri Schiavo, he became an EMT, then a registered respiratory therapist, and ultimately, a registered nurse. Over the years, Michael Schiavo came to recognize the horrible truth: his wife’s collapse was the direct result of an eating disorder, and neither he nor anyone else had put together the warning signs before it was too late. While her autopsy, released in June 2005, couldn't 100% confirm the existence of an eating disorder, it did report that Terri’s extremely low potassium serum level in her system at that fateful night was a leading cause of her collapse. And that low potassium indicates bulimia as “high on the list of differential diagnoses.” In addition to his passionate quest to spread the word about eating disorders, Michael Schiavo works to support issues related to family privacy and also to encourage everyone over the age of seventeen to have a living will. Michael Schiavo lives with his wife, Jodi, and their two children in Florida.

Bobby Seale With the success of Mario Van Peebles' film Panther, a new generation of film-goers discovered the lives and legacies of the Black Panthers. But until you've heard and seen legendary co-founder Bobby Seale, you still haven't experienced the real story. Co-founder and former chairman of the Black Panther Party, Seale is the last surviving architect of one of the most important movements in American and African-American history. Together with Huey P. Newton, Seale formed the Black Panther Party for Self Defense in 1966. They advocated the right to self-defense and moved to organize a realistic "Power to the People" revolution, putting their lives on the line against institutionalized racism, discrimination and police brutality. They began with only 400 members, but Seale's national membership drive swelled the ranks to over 5,000, in over 40 chapters and branches across America. Taking to the stage with his famous charisma and eloquence, he sheds light on the true birth of the Panthers (which grew from student activism, not the streets), transporting the audience back to the turbulence of the late '60s and early '70s, when the image of young black men with guns was unheard of. "Today, you don't need the guns," charges Bobby. "If you want to observe the police, do it with a camcorder!" Dubbing himself a "revolutionary humanist," Seale also brings the movement full circle, showing how times have changed, and giving a rousing call for a new '90s breed of social and political activism.
Joseph Sebarenzi Joseph Sebarenzi, former head of the Rwanda Parliament, he has endured tragedy most of us cannot fathom. He lost both his parents, seven siblings, and numerous other relatives in the Rwandan genocide of 1994. Yet, years later, as a senior government official in a position to exact revenge, he instead pushed for peace and reconciliation. "Revenge is like adding guilt to victim hood." says Sebarenzi. "It solves nothing. At some point, we have to ignore the past and envision the future." Sebarenzi grew up in Rwanda, and as a child saw glimpses of the tribal violence which years later would engulf his country. In 1994, when Hutu extremists slaughtered more than 800,000 Tutsis, Sebarenzi and his immediate family were safely out of the country, but many of Sebarenzi's extended family were not so lucky. Returning to Rwanda, Sebarenzi rose through the ranks of Parliament, eventually becoming Speaker, third in power only to the country's president. As the leader of parliament, Sebarenzi worked to improve good governance, speaking out for the independence of the legislature and against corruption in the government. Forced to resign, and Informed of a plot to assassinate him, he fled Rwanda and found exile in the United States. He still champions a broad process of restorative justice in Rwanda as the country struggles with the ongoing effects of mass genocide and retaliatory killing among its Hutu and Tutsi people. Sebarenzi teaches conflict resolution at the School for International Training, lectures on his experiences, consults, and works toward his PhD. Sebarenzi has also been an executive for national and international nonprofit organizations and a regular speaker on BBC and Voice of America. He plans to return to Rwanda eventually, and hopes his home country will soon be a safe place for people of all races, creeds and heritages. For his college lectures, Sebarenzi tells his dramatic and historic story, and imparts a message of peace and forgiveness. This unforgettable and emotional program is perfect for International Studies departments, Genocide Programs, African Studies, Multi-Cultural Programs, Peace Groups, Progressive Groups, Christian organizations and keynote lectures. Whatever your group, Joseph Sebarenzi is a man of peace and grace whose message will not soon be forgotten.
Dan Senor Dan Senor just returned from the Middle East, where he spent substantial time in Iraq, Israel, United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Jordan. Until the hand-over of power in Iraq, Dan Senor was the Chief Spokesperson for the U.S.-led Coalition in Iraq, and a Senior Advisor to Presidential Envoy L. Paul Bremer III, the Administrator of the Coalition Provisional Authority. Senor rode into Baghdad on the first convoy of civilians into Iraq from Kuwait, less than two weeks after the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime, and was one of the longest-serving American civilians in Iraq, extending his tour to 15 months, after originally committing to just a 90-day assignment with the Bush Administration. Working closely with the military under often less-than-ideal conditions, Senor advised the Bush Administration, the Blair Government in the U.K. and Ambassador Bremer on a variety of Iraqi strategic, policy and communication issues, and was the civilian face of the Coalition Authority to Americans, Europeans, Iraqis and the world. No one is better positioned to address the turbulent and revolutionary moment in the Middle East and the Bush Administration's strategy for dealing with the region. Senor has worked closely with the Bush Administration's national security team, including Secretaries Rice and Rumsfeld and Generals Abizaid and Sanchez, as well as senior officials throughout the Administration's foreign policy apparatus. He most recently served as an International Election Monitor based in Kiev and Kirovograd during the Ukrainian election. He appears regularly on television to provide analysis for national security and foreign affairs issues, and was recently published in the Wall Street Journal. An accomplished speaker, he gave more than a hundred press briefings while serving in Iraq, Senor comes to the podium to discuss the current, ever-changing global political situation. Because of Senor's international policy expertise, specifically on Iraq and Iran, the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, America's renewed engagement with Europe and the tension between Russia and the new Ukraine, he is uniquely positioned to speak to America's strategy and role in the world for the next four years and how the international community will react. Senor grew up in the United States and Canada and received his undergraduate degree from the University of Western Ontario and the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. After graduating from Harvard Business School, Senor worked for the Carlyle Group, a Washington, D.C.-based private equity firm. Prior to going to Harvard Business School for his MBA, Senor worked as an aide to then-Republican senator Spencer Abraham of Michigan during Abraham's term in the U.S. Senate. During his time with Senator Abraham, who is currently the U.S. Secretary of Energy, Senor served as a foreign policy legislative aide, press secretary and communications director.

Molly Shannon Another Saturday Night Live cast member who has taken her act to the big screen, Molly Shannon is probably best known to TV and film audiences as Mary Katherine Gallagher, the hapless, armpit-sniffing Catholic school girl she originated on SNL and then brought to multiplexes everywhere as the heroine of Superstar. Born in Shaker Heights, a posh suburb of Cleveland, on September 16, 1964, Shannon developed a proclivity for performing at an early age and dreamt of being famous. After receiving a Catholic school education, she earned a B.F.A. in drama from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, Circle in the Square Studio. Armed with her diploma, she headed West to L.A., where she proceeded to struggle in relative poverty and almost complete obscurity for the next nine years. Although she occasionally found bit parts in film and on such TV series as Seinfeld, Shannon mainly supported herself with odd jobs and waitressing. Finally, in 1994, she got her big break when she won a spot on Saturday Night Live. After making her debut during the 1995 season, Shannon became exceedingly popular with audiences, thanks to her impersonations of the likes of Monica Lewinsky, and Courtney Love. In 1998, Shannon joined fellow SNL cast members Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan to appear in the disastrous A Night at the Roxbury; the following year, she brought her own alter ego to the screen in Superstar. The film earned drastically mixed reviews, although it did fare somewhat better than any number of other SNL film adaptations. Also in 1999, Shannon played Drew Barrymore's newsroom colleague in Never Been Kissed and had a supporting role alongside Robert De Niro, Billy Crystal, and Lisa Kudrow in Analyze This. She subsequently starred alongside Jim Carrey in Ron Howard's 2000 screen adaptation of The Grinch Who Stole Christmas

Walid Shoebat Walid Shoebat as a young man, he became a member of the Palestinian Liberation Organization, and participated in acts of terror and violence against Israel, and was later imprisoned in the Russian Compound, Jerusalem's central prison for incitement and violence against Israel. After his release, he continued his life of violence and rioting in Bethlehem and the Temple Mount. After entering the U.S, he worked as a counselor for the Arab Student Organization at Loop College in Chicago and continued his anti-Israel activities. Driven by a deep passion to heal his own soul, and to bring the truth about the Jews and Israel to the world, Walid shed his former life and his work as a software engineer and set out to tirelessly bring the cause of Israel to tens of thousands of people throughout the world: churches and synagogues, civic groups, government leaders and media. Walid has written several online books including "Dear Muslim, Let Me Tell You Why I Believed" and "Israel, And The World's Mock Trial”, where he exposes anti-Semitism and the hatred of Jews in both the Islamic Christian and secular worlds. Pauly Shore Pauly Shore and the world-famous Comedy Store stages a comeback in TBS's Original Comedy Series, "Minding the Store," which premiered July 17, 2006. TBS is giving down-but-not-out comedian Pauly Shore (Encino Man, Jury Duty) the chance to get his mother's world-famous Comedy Store back on track, while also giving his career a boost, in this new original comedy series. "The Comedy Store is the place where such comedians as Jim Carrey, Richard Pryor and David Letterman got their start, so it seems perfectly fitting for television's very funny network to follow its revival," said Steve Koonin, executive vice president and chief opperating officer of TBS. "The show will blend the comedy on-stage at The Comedy Store with the quirkly personalities and offbeat backstage antics of Pauly Shore and his mother, Comedy Store owner Mitzi Shore." "Minding the Store" opens with Mitzi reluctantly handing over the reins of her legendary Comedy Store to her youngest son Pauly, in the hopes that maybe he can pump some life back into it. With his plans of renovations, new promotions and A-list talent, Pauly's goal of making the comedy club great again proves to be a daunting task, especially since his mom just can't seem to let him take over completely.
Break Show A distinctive American art form with hazy African roots that run deep through the streets of inner cities, Hip Hop defies easy definition. Comprised of five elements - Dance, MC (or rap), DJ, Graffiti, and Fashion - each component is improvised and recombined in a myriad of rhythms and styles so that Hip Hop reinvents itself continually. Though the exact origins of Hip Hop are unclear, dance elements hearken back to an African tradition, involving a variety of footwork patterns, spinning and gymnastic type moves, Hip Hop dancing has been heavily influenced by a number of sources. Some consider James Brown and his 1969 hit: "Get on the Good Foot", one of the starting points. Inspired by his energetic, almost acrobatic dance on stage, many people began dancing on the "Good Foot," often incorporating moves that involved dramatic drops and spins. Martial-arts films, which were extremely popular in the 1970s, contributed some of the more spectacularly muscular and acrobatic elements to this burgeoning urban dance phenomena. The term, "Breakdancing" actually arose with the growing recognition of this art form by the media. The early 80's "battles" between dance crews, attracted the attention of the public and "Breaking" "B-Boy-ing" or "Breakdancing" became associated with other street dance styles such as "Locking" and "Popping". BREAK! The Urban Funk Spectacular traces the history of Hip Hop Dancing over the last thirty years. It is a tribute to this American urban art form. Cast members are supremely talented artists from the world of "Breakdancing", "Locking", "Electric Boogaloo" or "Popping," Power Tumbling, as well as DJ-ing and Bucket Drumming. Many have been featured soloists in performances with such show-business legends as Madonna, Janet Jackson, B2K, 50 Cents, Ringo Star, Whitney Houston, Puff Daddy and Luther Vandross. BREAK! - based in New York City - has received standing ovations across five continents for its sensational show.

Kevin Sites Kevin Sites is re-defining journalism for the digital age. As Yahoo!'s first news correspondent, he is spending a year covering every major global conflict for "Kevin Sites in the Hot Zone" on Yahoo! News. One man. One year. A world of conflict. This project is an audacious attempt to bring the very best traditions of battlefield reportage into the 21st century. By combining Sites' remarkable skills as a solo journalist ("SoJo") with Yahoo!'s global reach, 400 million Internet users around the world have instantaneous access to eye-witness reporting of some of our planet's most ferocious and intractable conflicts. The project has generated widespread publicity and discussion, and has cemented Sites' place as one of the rising stars of American journalism. Sites is a highly respected war correspondent. He has spent the past five years covering global war and disaster for several national networks. He is a pioneer of solo journalism, in which he works completely alone, carrying a backpack of portable digital technology to shoot, write, edit, and transmit multimedia reports. In November 2004, as an NBC News correspondent, he filmed and reported on one of the defining moments of the current Iraqi war when he videotaped a U.S. Marine shooting a wounded Iraqi insurgent in a Fallujah mosque. The story turned Sites into a flashpoint of pro- and anti-war controversy, and he was both praised as a journalist willing to reveal the harsh realities of war and vilified as a traitor to both the Marine unit in which he was embedded and to his country. His innovative approach to his work can be seen on his award-winning war blog, www.kevinsites.net. In 2004, Sites was honored with the Payne Award for ethics in journalism for both his television and Web coverage of the mosque shooting. He garnered an Emmy nomination for the same story. Recently, Wired magazine named Sites as the recipient of their RAVE Award—the first ever for blogging. Sites is a former university lecturer who is frequently invited to speak at many national and international media forums, including London's famous "Frontline Club," which supports independent war correspondents. He is also a regular speaker at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, as wells as the Arab American Media Forum, sponsored by Aspen Institute.

His writing credits include the popular book "150 Ways to Tell if You're Ghetto," the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards, the 2003 ESPY Awards, and the popular comedy specials "Jamie Foxx Unleashed – Lost, Stolen and Leaked!" and "Jamie Foxx: I Might Need Security."
Art Spiegelman Art Spiegelman has almost single-handedly brought comic books out of the toy closet and onto the literature shelves. In 1992 he won the Pulitzer Prize for his masterful Holocaust narrative Maus — which portrayed Jews as mice and Nazis as cats. Maus II continued the remarkable story of his parents’ survival of the Nazi regime and their lives later in America. His comics are best known for their shifting graphic styles, their formal complexity, and controversial content. In his lecture “Comix 101.1" Spiegelman takes his audience on a chronological tour of the evolution of comics, all the while explaining the value of this medium and why it should not be ignored. He believes that in our post-literate culture the importance of the comic is on the rise, for “comics echo the way the brain works." Having rejected his parents aspirations for him to become a dentist, Art Spiegelman studied cartooning in high school and began drawing professionally at age 16. He went on to study art and philosophy at Harpur College before becoming part of the underground comics movement. As creative consultant for Topps Bubble Gum Co. from 1965-1987, Spiegelman designed Wacky Packages, Garbage Pail Kids and other novelty items, and taught history and aesthetics of comics at the School for Visual Arts in New York from 1979-1986. In 1980, Spiegelman founded RAW, the acclaimed avant-garde comics magazine, with his wife, Françoise Mouly. They've more recently co-edited Little Lit, a series of three comics anthologies for children published by HarperCollins ("Comics-They're not just for Grown-ups Anymore"). In 1997 Spiegelman created a picture book for young children called Open Me… I’m A Dog with the same publisher. His work has been published in many periodicals, including The New Yorker, where he was a staff artist and writer from 1993-2003. A collection of his New Yorker work is soon to be published by Pantheon, who also published his illustrated version of the 1928 lost classic, The Wild Party, by Joseph Moncure March. In 2004 he completed a two-year cycle of broadsheet-sized color comics pages, In the Shadow of No Towers, first published in a number of European newspapers and magazines including Die Zeit and The London Review of Books. A book version of these highly political works was published by Pantheon in the United States, appeared on many national bestseller lists, and was selected by The New York Times Book Review as one of the 100 Notable Books of 2004. Spiegelman is working on a comix format memoir, Portrait of the Artist as a Young Nerd, which will incorporate a reprinting of his most significant underground comix work, as well as a forthcoming anniversary edition of Maus, entitled Meta Maus.A major exhibition of his work has been arranged by Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, as part of the "15 Masters of 20th Century Comics" exhibit (November 2005). In his spare time he's working on the libretto and the sets for a music-theater piece about the rise and fall of comic books entitled “Drawn to Death: A Three Panel Opera" with composer Phillip Johnston, to be produced with The Improbable Theater company in 2007. In 2005, Art Spiegelman was made a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France.

Jerry Springer Jerry Springer Throughout a long and varied career, cultural icon Jerry can claim many labels other than “host”: two-term mayor of Cincinnati, political pundit, lawyer, award-winning newscaster, country recording artist, TV personality, movie star, and Broadway actor, among them. The multi-faceted Springer, with a passion for politics, was named Democrat of the Year from Ohio and served as a Delegate-at-Large at the 2004 Democratic National Convention. A regular guest on the talk circuit, Springer has appeared many shows, including The Tonight Show, Late Night with David Letterman, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, MSNBC’s Hardball with Chris Matthews, The View, and Crossfire. Today, because of the continued popularity of his show, Springer is a sought after guest speaker on college campuses in the US and abroad. Ringmaster, a book written by Springer, hit store shelves in November 1998 and shared Springer’s personal look into his show, as well as remembrances from his childhood and professional career. In 1999, Springer played himself in the hit movie Austin Powers 2: The Spy Who Shagged Me. He became a featured character in The Simpsons 1998 Halloween Special and played himself on The X-Files. Having graced the covers of Rolling Stone, Esquire, and New York Magazine, Springer was asked by Barbara Walters to be part of her year-end 10 Most Fascinating People of 1998 special for ABC. In 1977, Springer was elected mayor of Cincinnati by the largest plurality in the city’s history. At age 33, he was one of the country’s youngest mayors. Five years later, Springer launched his broadcasting career as a political reporter and commentator on Cincinnati’s WLWT-TV. He became anchor and managing editor in 1984, and was Cincinnati’s top-rated news anchor until he relinquished the post in January 1993. During his tenure, Springer received seven Emmy Awards for his nightly commentaries, the forerunner to his “Final Thought,” and was voted television’s best anchor for five consecutive years by readers of Cincinnati Magazine. Springer is perhaps most proud of his involvement with Cincinnati Reaches Out, contributing on-site reporting from Ethiopia and Sudan, where he documented the effort to provide assistance to famine-stricken Africans. The company that owned WLWT-TV also owned The Phil Donahue Show. One day, Springer’s employers took him to lunch and gave him a new assignment: hosting his own talk show, which evolved through the years, achieving its status as a cultural phenomenon.

Mavis Staples Soul and gospel legend Mavis Staples possesses one of the most recognizable and treasured voices in contemporary music. From her early days sharing lead vocals with her groundbreaking family group, The Staple Singers, to her powerful solo recordings, Mavis Staples is an inspirational force in modern popular culture and music. A 40-year-plus veteran of the music scene - a Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inductee and one of VH1's '100 Greatest Women of Rock and Roll - Staples (both with The Staple Singers and on her own) is responsible for blazing a rhythm & blues trail while never relinquishing her gospel roots. Her voice has influenced artists from Bob Dylan to Prince (who dubbed her "the epitome of soul") and she has appeared with everyone from the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to Bill Cosby, Presidents Kennedy, Carter, and Clinton, to Janis Joplin, Pink Floyd, Santana and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and has recorded with Bob Dylan, Los Lobos, Aretha Franklin, Marty Stuart and many others. Her new CD Have A Little Faith (Alligator), is a stirring collection of uplifting, gospel-rooted songs deeply seated in her faith and spirituality. Produced by Jim Tullio and Staples, the album features the strongest collection of material - both originals and interpretations - Mavis has ever assembled. Have A Little Faith takes listeners deep into the heart of the singer Vibe magazine called "one of pop's most distinctive voices." Of releasing her music on Alligator, known worldwide for its blues releases, Mavis says, "Blues and gospel are cousins. They're very closely related. Both styles of music lift you up from what's keeping you down." Mavis began her career with her family group in 1950. Initially singing locally at churches and appearing on a weekly radio show, the Staples' scored a hit in 1956 with "Uncloudy Day" for the VeeJay label. When Mavis graduated high school in 1957, The Staple Singers took their music on the road. Led by family patriarch Roebuck "Pops" Staples on guitar and including the voices of Mavis and her siblings Cleo, Yvonne, and Pervis, the Staples were called "God's Greatest Hitmakers."

Ben Stein Ben Stein is probably the closest any man comes these days to being a true renaissance man. His financial and economics work was cited in the efforts of the recent Nobel prize winner in Economics, George Akerlof. He is also the host of the long running comedy quiz show on Comedy Central, Win Ben Stein's Money, a show that has won seven Emmies. He has written hundreds of thousands of words about financial fraud and investment policy, but two words made him a household name: "Bueller" and "Anyone, Anyone." ( From his iconic role in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off.") He has written novels that the New York Times describes as "stunning," but what you have probably heard him talk about recently are "dry eyes, red eyes, and clear eyes." He worked and demonstrated and struggled for voting rights for African Americans, and he also was a speech writer for Richard Nixon and for Gerald Ford. He introduced the world to complex concepts of the politics of culture, but he also introduced the world to Jimmy Kimmel and made possible The Man Show. Lawyer, teacher, actor, comic, economist, father, novelist, essayist, expert on finance, meet Ben Stein!

Jon Stewart Jon Stewart is considered one of America's top social and comedic voices. From his anchor chair of Comedy Centrals The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, he "has breathed new life into a show that hadn't even seemed to need it," said The New York Times. Since taking over as the anchorman of The Daily Show, his presence has seen higher ratings and awareness for himself and Comedy Central. During the 2000 election year, Stewart and The Daily Show lead the way to the White House as the torch bearers of Comedy Central's Indecision 2000 election coverage that covered the elections, debates and candidates from the Iowa Caucus and New Hampshire primary straight through to the National Conventions and culminated on election night with a one-hour special. Prior to taking over The Daily Show, Stewart's television work was on HBO's critically acclaimed series-within-a-series, The Larry Sanders Show, playing a character he should know very well: himself. The final season saw, among other things, Stewart seemingly being groomed to take over the fictitious late-night throne from the perpetually paranoid Larry Sanders. Stewart also served as a creative consultant on the series. On the feature film front, Stewart starred with Adam Sandler in the hit film Big Daddy. He also starred in the romantic drama Playing by Heart, which marked a departure for him in that he was allowed to show more of a dramatic side of himself than people are accustomed to seeing. Stewart also starred in The Faculty, a horror-comedy directed by Robert Rodriguez. While it may be the conventional route for stand-up comedians to sign a book deal and expound on their early days inside dingy comedy clubs, Stewart took the path less traveled with his debut book, Naked Pictures of Famous People. A collection of fictitious and humorous what-if essays, Naked Pictures has appeared on many bestseller lists including The New York Times. He also wrote The Daily Show with Jon Stewart Presents America: A Citizen's Guide to Democracy Inaction. His popularity continued to grow as he became increasingly comfortable in his role on The Daily Show, where Stewart would take home Emmy Awards for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series in both 2003 and 2004, and Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Program in 2004. maintained his dominance at the 2005 Emmy Awards, winning statues for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series and Outstanding Writing for the same category.
