Jane Brody For a recent birthday, Jane Brody received a T-shirt that proclaimed "Still Perfect ---After All These Years." Once she stopped laughing, she began to think that it really should have said "Still Trying --- After All These Years" -- still trying to be good to her body, to fuel it right and move it regularly so that it will continue to be good to her. But while her regular menu focuses on vegetables, fruits, grains, potatoes, beans and peas "fleshed" out with circumspect amounts of low-fat dairy products, lean meats and poultry and all manner of fish and shellfish, she is no fanatic. Moderation and variety, but not deprivation and denial, are her watchwords. To keep her body from "rusting out," she insists on daily physical activity, alternating between walking, cycling, swimming, ice skating, playing tennis, hiking, gardening and cross-country skiing. The result is a woman who is more robust, energetic, youthful and trim at 55 than she was at 15. Jane Brody received her B.S. degree in biochemistry from the New York State College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University in 1962 and a masters degree in science writing from the University of Wisconsin School of Journalism the following year. After two years as a general assignment reporter for the Minneapolis Tribune, in 1965 she joined The New York Times as a full-time specialist in medicine and biology. In 1976 she was appointed The Times' Personal Health columnist, and her widely read and quoted column continues to appear every Wednesday in The Times and in more than 100 other newspapers around the country. In addition, her articles on other aspects of science and medicine appear frequently in The Times' “Wednesday Health Page" and “Tuesday's Science Times." Ms. Brody has also written scores of magazine articles and lectures frequently on health and nutrition to audiences both lay and professional. She has appeared on hundreds of radio and television shows throughout the country and received numerous prestigious awards for journalistic excellence. In 1987, she received an honorary doctorate from Princeton University, and in 1993 she received an honorary doctorate from Hamline University in St. Paul. Ms. Brody has written eight books: Secrets of Good Health; You Can Fight Cancer and Win; Jane Brody's Nutrition Book; Jane Brody's The New York Times Guide to Personal Health; Jane Brody's Good Food Gourmet and Jane Brody's Good Food Book. Her newest cookbook, Jane Brody's Good Seafood Book, was published in October 1994 and, Jane Brody's Cold and Flu Fighter, was released in October 1995. Her ninth book, Jane Brody's Allergy Fighter, was published in April 1997. Ms. Brody was born on May 19, 1941, in Brooklyn, New York. She presently resides in New York with her husband Richard Engguist, a lyricist, and their energetic spaniel Max. Their twin sons, Erik and Lorin, now both married, share her enthusiasm for wholesome food and fitness.

Veronica Portillo Veronica Portillo has grown into a confident, intelligent, sexy, and open-minded woman. A first generation Cuban-American, she was the first and only in her family to pursue a higher education. Her love and passion for the arts and multiculturalism inspired her to leave her childhood home in very republican and conservative Orange County, California for a much more dynamic and liberal environment as she studied at the University of California at Berkeley. It was here that Veronica truly found herself, and was able to define her own set of values by borrowing ideals from both living extremes and her inner strength. Having suffered from both bulimia and anorexia throughout her twenty-first year, Veronica has only truly become comfortable in her own skin through finding much needed confidence within herself. Not coincidentally, this time period has also been one where Veronica has overcome her long and repetitive history of emotionally abusive relationships with the opposite sex. Releasing herself from the physically binding and emotionally limiting unhealthy eating and relationship habits has given her a newfound freedom and has helped to form the beautiful and free-spirited person she is today. Upon feeling this change Veronica was determined to reach out and share her personal story and her knowledge with others. Her presence on MTVs Road Rules: Semester at Sea and three Real World/Road Rules Challenges has given her the opportunity to be impressionable and gifted her with a voice. At the time, Veronica speaks up at high schools, colleges, and universities around the country on topics such as selfesteem, body image, eating disorders, and relationships.
Pam Reed In July 2002, Ultramarathoner, mother of three children and a step mom of two, Pam Reed shocked the long-distance running world when she won the world’s most grueling race, the Badwater 135-mile trek from Death Valley to the portal of Mt. Whitney, by five hours and broke the existing women’s record by 1 hour, 51 minutes. One year later, in even hotter then the 135-degree temperatures for the 28-hour climb from the hottest desert floor on earth, she became the first women ever to defend a Badwater title-again beating many of the world’s finest men and women Ultra-marathoners. Reed is a survivor of Anorexia Nervosa, an eating disorder disease that affects over 3 million people in the United States. She recognizes many parallels between her life race to conquer this condition and the challenge of competitive racing. She is proud both personally and professionally of her great accomplishments in these areas and discusses her condition without reservation. She hopes that others will find strength in her example, strive to overcome similar difficulties, and go forward to become their personal best. Jenni Schaefer In dance class, at the age of only four-years-old, Jenni Schaefer thought she was fat. Jenni knows eating disorders, but she also knows freedom. Based on the unique therapeutic technique by psychotherapist and author, Thom Rutledge, Jenni treated her eating disorder as a relationship rather than an illness. Naming her anorexia/bulimia ‘Ed,’ an acronym for eating disorder, Jenni learned to distinguish herself from Ed, and eventually got rid of him. Jenni wrote a book about her experience titled Life Without Ed: How One Woman Declared Independence from Her Eating Disorder and How You Can Too (McGraw-Hill). She is a contributing author to Chicken Soup for the Recovering Soul and the upcoming book Chicken Soup for the Recovering Soul: Daily Inspirations (HCI Books). Jenni writes regularly for self-help/recovery publications, speaks nationwide, and has appeared in Cosmopolitan, Cosmogirl, Publisher’s Weekly, and Woman’s World. In addition to speaking and writing, Jenni is a singer/songwriter — using music during her recovery and now within her outreach to help others. She is known for incorporating humor into her work, which provides a hopeful light and adds a fresh perspective. Jenni, who serves as a Special Consultant for The Ranch Eating Disorders Extended Care Program, was honored by Jessica Weiner as a Featured Actionist for her efforts in promoting eating disorder awareness. Jenni says, “If just one person decides to stay on the path of health instead of getting on the road of body hatred and self-destruction, then my work has been successful.”
Michael Schiavo Michael Schiavo Author, Terri: The Truth and Activist Program Title - Eating Disorders: The Truth Behind Terri's Tragedy Michael Schiavos private life became a public battleground during his seven-year controversial, and ultimately successful, campaign to remove his wife Terri Schiavos feeding tube after she collapsed and lapsed into a persistent vegetative state. One of the more polarizing events in recent history, the headlines, editorials, and reports seemingly covered every possible angle of The Schiavo Case, as the nation divided over right-to-life and privacy issues. Yet one important angle remained unexplored until now. At the podium, Michael Schiavo, with the aid of time, reflection, and medical training, reveals Terris secret life before the tragedy: her battle with bulimia. Michael Schiavos little-known personal story, fighting first to heal his wife and ultimately to let her die with dignity, were detailed in his book, Terri: The Truth. In his quest to care for Terri Schiavo, he became an EMT, then a registered respiratory therapist, and ultimately, a registered nurse. Over the years, Michael Schiavo came to recognize the horrible truth: his wifes collapse was the direct result of an eating disorder, and neither he nor anyone else had put together the warning signs before it was too late. While her autopsy, released in June 2005, couldn't 100% confirm the existence of an eating disorder, it did report that Terris extremely low potassium serum level in her system at that fateful night was a leading cause of her collapse. And that low potassium indicates bulimia as high on the list of differential diagnoses. In addition to his passionate quest to spread the word about eating disorders, Michael Schiavo works to support issues related to family privacy and also to encourage everyone over the age of seventeen to have a living will. Michael Schiavo lives with his wife, Jodi, and their two children in Florida.
